Entrepreneurs, home-based businesses, and independent professionals are always on the look out for systems that help them get more referrals.

    How to Network Successfully

    The key for networking is to have a follow-up system for every networking event you attend. Somehow you need a system to keep everything straight.

    Most people attend networking meetings and never follow up with the people they meet. Here are seven simple ideas to follow up successfully:

    1. Send an email within 24 hours whenever you meet
      someone letting them know you enjoyed meeting them.

    2. Mail a simple “nice to meet you” greeting card with 24
      hours.

    3. Call them within a week and set up a coffee, lunch, or
      short meeting to learn more about their business and how you two can help each
      other. This meeting is more to learn about them then you telling them about
      you. Get their birthday so you can put it your system to send them a birthday
      card.

    4. If by chance you did not meet in that week, call and
      set up another time to meet.

    5. After your meeting, send a greeting card thanking them
      for their time.

    6. Give them some kind of referral within 30 days. This
      does not have to be a person. This could also be an idea or a resource they
      can use.

    7. After your meeting make contact again within 30 days. You are trying to build up a network that will last a long time.

    Whether you attend a networking event every week or just once in a while, the key is how you follow-up! Use this little system and you will see amazing results.

    I have been an entrepreneur for many years. During this time I have been exposed to numerous referral programs and systems. After all these years I have concluded that the number one method of getting more referrals is to simply develop a very personal and close relationship with your customers or clients through regular contact, so that when the time is right,
    they will remember you for their own needs and will also refer you their
    friends, relatives, and colleagues who need your help and services.

    The best way I’ve found to keep in personal touch is by sending greeting cards. I’m not the only one who has discovered this.

    - An Autoresponder: This is a real necessity if you want a business and not just a hobby. When you have a family to support this is a real no brainer. This is your email follow up service. You get a name added to your list and this is where they go. You will use this to stay in touch and build relationships with your customers and soon-to-be customers.

    - A helpdesk: in the beginning when your business and sales are small you can handle all the little questions and emails yourself. One of the things that will keep a small business is small is thinking “I can do that myself” if you want to truly grow; you need to share the workload (petty tasks) and focus on what you truly want to do creatively for your business.

    - Membership Site software: once you’re addicted to the internet marketing lifestyle, you will realize this oh-so-simple fact, it’s great to make a sale, but it’s even better to make a sale once and get paid for it every month. Continuity is king.

    - Teleconferencing software: If you want an easy way to create and crank out high ticket products, audios and a transcript is an easy to make, high-value product.

    Of course everything we’ve touched on so far only scratches the surface, but these are the necessities that not only get you started but will make you above average. Keep your eyes peeled for more articles that will take you from beginner to winner.

    Email has really taken over as the #1 form of communication, to the point where it’s rare to receive anything significant by mail. As a result, when you do, it really stands out. That’s the principle behind companies like SendOutCards and Client Connections. And I have to admit that I love it when something unexpected shows up in my mailbox. Like a couple of weeks ago, I was puzzled to receive a large envelope from EzineArticles.com, but my confusion turned to delight when I opened it to find a mousepad with “Ezine Articles Expert Author” on it. That made me feel really good! (Now I just need a mouse to go with it.)
